News Round-up – 3rd January

One in five children born at the turn of the millennium faces leaving school without a job or university place because of “flawed” education policies, according to research from Impetus – The Private Equity Foundation. It recommends a shake-up of Ofsted to rate schools on the extent to which they equip pupils with “employability skills”.

 

Schools are missing out on millions of pounds of funding set aside for poor pupils because families are failing to claim free lunches. Pupil Premium money, set aside to help educate poorer children, is linked to free school meals registration but a Department for Education report shows only 18 per cent of pupils are taking up free school meals, while 21 per cent are eligible.
